See the list
I've created a "wish list" on powells.com to capture suggestions so far. The link on the sidebar should take you straight there.
(Note, I've created a dummy email to establish this list, which is also what you use to find the list on powells.com if you don't have the direct link: ninasnewbery@gmail.com. I won't ever check this email account, and if you decide to send to it anyway, you'll get a message back saying so. Post a comment here instead.)

My favorite book so far in 2006 is THE BOOK OF STORY BEGINNINGS by Kristin Kladstrup. It's part INKSPELL and INKHEART and part THE GREAT GOOD THING.
How about Katherine Sturtevant's A TRUE AND FAITHFUL NARRATIVE?
Definitely at the top of my list to add: BLACK DUCK by Janet Taylor Lisle. For me, this is historical fiction at its best: significant historical period with local community color; fascinating factual event woven into story; suspenseful adventure; complexities of community and individual ethical behaviour respectfully presented; crisp writing; author's note with more to chew on.
The story is about coastal Maine towns deeply involved in rum-running during Prohibtion. The "Black Duck" was a real boat that ferried illegal alcohol onshore, skippered by an almost mythic Robin Hood-type character. Do I need to confess that I love setting above all? And this has atmosphere, atmosphere!
